Innovation Or Restoration, The Historic House Garden Dilemma

Gardens stuck in a rut, gardens old and tired, gardens badly in need of new development. How do the owners and/ or the head gardener address this thorny problem. Should they go back to a previous historic plan or develop a new innovative design for the 21st Century. All of the speakers are at the forefront of this debate and have long experience in this the most difficult of historic garden dilemmas

9.00-10.00 Registration and coffee

10.00 Chairman’s opening remarks

10.15-10.55. John Watkins. Head of Gardens – English Heritage. Has been involved in many historic garden restorations, most recently at Kenilworth Castle and suggests that when there are historic plans available, restoration should not be ignored, but what are the problems?

10.55-11.25. Stephen Anderton. Gardening Correspondent for the Times and horticultural author. With a wide experience in garden development and original design, Stephen argues that a new design concept chosen to complement the historic site will lift the historic garden to a new level.

11.30-12.10. Trevor Nicholson. Head Gardener at Harewood House Gardens. With both restoration of the parterre at Harewood and the new original development of the Himalayan Garden, Trevor has seen through projects on both sides of the augment. Does he feel that there is room in a large garden for innovation and restoration to work side by side?

12.10-12.30. Summing up and questions

12.30-01.50. Lunch 

01.55 -2.30. Lord Cavendish owner of Holker Hall in Cumbria. As the owner of a large historic garden with innovative new developments and many old features, what approach considering the financial implications should the owner consider? Is it better to have one big new scheme or phase in development over several years?
