The Forestry Commission census of Woodland and Trees published in 2001 shows that small woods make up the majority of woodlands in the UK. A small wood is not defined by size alone, as they are often between 10 and 25 hectares and in some cases, closer to 100 hectares. The area of woodland in the UK has increased significantly in the last 20 years, mainly through the planting of small woods. The SWA supports the owners of these new woods, as well as those who own or manage more established woodlands. What is The Small Woods Association? The main aim of the SWA is to encourage the care and enjoyment of small woods, which make up an important part of the diverse countryside throughout the UK. In order to achieve this aim, we have established the following objectives: To bring together everyone with an interest in small woods by organising courses and conferences to provide opportunities for networking. To inform and motivate those who own or manage small woods and to encourage greater public understanding and awareness of the many benefits that woodlands provide. The information line and publications we produce, such as our quarterly magazine Smallwoods play an important role in fulfilling this objective. To continue to have a strong input in UK and regional policy in order to ensure that issues regarding small woodlands are properly researched, documented and translated into policy and action.
To help preserve knowledge of our woodland heritage.. The SWA also assists the many woodland initiatives in the UK through networking and support The MagazineThe Smallwoods magazine not only contains practical advice for both woodland owners and managers, it is full of articles; Editors and Chairmans comments; SWA news; regional reports; woodland news; reviews; a comprehensive diary of events; Woody Webs; views from the regions; project profiles; opinion columns etc. ReadershipThe Small Woods
