What is a small wood?
The Forestry Commission census of Woodland and Trees published in 2001 shows that small woods make up the majority of woodlands in the UK.
A small wood is not defined by size alone, as they are often between 10 and 25 hectares and in some cases, closer to 100 hectares.
The area of woodland in the UK has increased significantly in the last 20 years, mainly through the planting of small woods. The SWA supports the owners of these new woods, as well as those who own or manage more established woodlands.
What is The Small Woods Association?
The main aim of the SWA is to encourage the care and enjoyment of small woods, which make up an important part of the diverse countryside throughout the UK. In order to achieve this aim, we have established the following objectives:
To help preserve knowledge of our woodland heritage.
The SWA also assists the many woodland initiatives in the UK through networking and support
