Victorian Society
The Victorian Society

The Victorian Society exists to save Victorian and Edwardian buildings of special architectural merit from needless destruction or disfigurement.

It was founded in 1958 as the national pressure group fighting to protect Victorian and Edwardian buildings in England and Wales. Among its founder members were John Betjeman and Nikolaus Pevsner.

Today, the Victorian Society has around 3,400 members. It is a registered charity supported mainly by subscriptions from its members and by grants from English Heritage and Cadw.

By law the Society must be consulted over any proposal to demolish even part of a listed building. It also lobbies for changes in the law regarding conservation of our built heritage.

Publications

In addition to its magazine, the Victorian, the Society produces a wide range of publications including the acclaimed series of ‘Care for Victorian Houses’ booklets for owners and architects. Most recently the Society launched ‘The Victorian Society Book of the Victorian House’, published by Aurum Press. For any house-proud owner of a Victorian property this book represents a unique and invaluable resource. It is packed with information about Victorian architectural ideas, building methods and materials, as well as practical advice on maintenance and conservation.
