THE CONFERENCE

This year’s school will explore the highly complex and increasingly relevant theme of adaptive reuse, examining how context, significance, and fabric shape the ways in which we understand, value, and protect the historic environment. It will consider how thoughtful reuse can enable sustainable, well-informed change, supporting places to evolve and remain relevant while respecting their heritage, now and long into the future.

WHO IS ATTENDING

The IHBC is the professional body for building conservation practitioners and historic environment experts working in the UK and beyond. The Institute exists to establish, develop and maintain the highest standards of conservation practice, to support the effective protection and enhancement of the historic environment, and to promote heritage-led regeneration and access to the historic environment for all.

Members work mainly in local authorities and other publicly funded bodies like English Heritage, but also in private practice and UK conservation organisations. The Delegates for this conference have a wide variety of backgrounds which will include surveyors, planners, architects, conservation officers, urban designers, structural engineers, heritage managers, archaeologists, project managers, construction and engineering professionals, policy makers, specifiers, innovators, landscapers and historians to name but a few. All of whom are involved in the care and conservation of the historic environment.

The Annual School will be hosted in partnership with IHBC North Branch and will attract delegates from right across the UK. It will also appeal greatly to those in the local Newcastle catchment area. We expect well over 100 delegates all of whom will have a significant influence on the use and choice of materials and services in both the public and private sectors.

The School welcomes people working in national and local government and related bodies, private practice, education, academia, charities and othervoluntary bodies.
